Make a difference one step at a time

M
uch has been written about eco-homes and making your home environmentally friendly, but mostly from the architectural perspective. Unfortunately little has been said about the relationship between interior design and sustainability.

According to the World Commission on Environment and Development, green or sustainable development is 'development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.

In some respects interior design is an emblem of consumer culture and at its worst is a contributor to the throw-away society found in many developed societies in the late 20th century. But 2008 was the year that people generally started to consider the impact of their carbon footprint on the environment.

Luxury Kitchens

Luxury Kitchen - Richardson Homes - Utah Luxury
With the 2008 Utah county parade of homes ahead of us, there is a buzz about getting ideas in the air. The homes that are featured are rich with amazing inspiration that conjure up a wealth of ideas. Many that go through the homes remember one thing after they leave, what the kitchen looked like. Did the kitchen have appliances that matched the cabinetry? How high-tech did the appliances get? How was the flow of the layout? It never ceases to amaze me that when I walk around these homes it is always the kitchen that draws the crowd. Also new to the realm of kitchens is the ever famous outdoor kitchen. This has become a trend in many modern homes to have an outdoor barbecue with all the amenities found inside the home. Everything from outdoor fireplaces to flat screen TV's are all the rage. Just when you thought the only thing you could do in the yard was work, now you can actually throw a party, cook, and hang out with everyone at the same time. Whether outside or in, kitchens are what make the house. Luxury kitchens are what set the standards and the parade of homes is always a treat. Look for designer kitchens in the upcoming parade of homes in Utah County May 30th - June 14th. Salt Lake will be amazing from August 1st - 16th and Park City will be showcased from August 23rd - September 7th. See you there!

For many, a high end kitchen is all about the appearance. For some it is what appliances you use. For professional chefs it is a combo of appliances and flow. There is no right answer to what makes the perfect luxury kitchen, just a lot of really excellent ideas.
For the more modern kitchen, smooth or clean lined cabinetry is a must. Most high-end modern kitchens are decked out with custom cabinets that range from stained wood to a high gloss custom painted acrylic. Many of these kitchens are using creative lighting ideas all around the kitchen. From custom pendant lamps to the ever cool "under the onyx countertop" lighting. Speaking of countertops, many homes now use concrete countertops in a variety of rooms and ways. Concrete is even being left as the main surface for flooring in many rooms. To make for the ultimate modern kitchen, a good clean lined kitchen with a few surprises will definitely impress.

Traditional elegance will never disappear. Fads may come and go but traditional homes are generally safe from fads. These homes focus on details in woodwork, are generally focused on natural lighting and rarely do they feel unfamiliar. These kitchens make for great family entertaining areas. A traditional kitchen is a great style to have in a home that might be more transitional between elegant and rustic. More contemporary fixtures would make a traditional kitchen feel classy and elegant where more antiqued fixtures might feel more European or Tuscan. Traditional kitchens are also a good way to go if you are thinking of selling your home.

A high-end rustic kitchen generally needs to feel more open than others. These kitchens require brilliant lighting and lots of windows. When done right, these kitchens are absolutely stunning. Many homes in the Park City area are rustic in nature and have very high end kitchens. These kitchens generally include alder cabinets with custom knobs and straps. The sinks are either of a metal material like copper or are large farmhouse sinks. These kitchens are meant to feel at home in their appropriate surroundings and are the ultimate way showing how much you love the outdoors. Many homeowners feel that the kitchen is one of the most expensive ways to update your home and I am not going to lie, it can be. So being thoughtful and preparing ahead will help you in your journey. Hiring a good architect might not be such a bad idea. Make sure you account for everything ahead of time. Think from floor to ceiling and from ceiling to floor. Also think of the natural flow of the kitchen. What will help you most and make your guest feel more comfortable in your kitchen. If you plan ahead you may find that your kitchen is just what the others want.
